Chapter One

The country that held us

This country did not have to make room for us. And yet it did. We came to Australia the way so many families do — from different corners of the world, carrying different languages, different memories, and the same quiet hope: that here, our children might have the chance to grow into all they were meant to be.

This is a land that has nurtured people from every continent on earth — a place that takes the word belonging and makes it real for those who were not born to it. It gave us safety. It gave us opportunity. It gave us a future we could not have imagined for ourselves anywhere else.

We have never forgotten that gift. Before it was a center, before it had a name or a single room, Country Kids was born out of gratitude — and out of a longing to one day give something back to the country that had given us everything.

Chapter Two

The long way around

We did not arrive at early childhood in a straight line. Our journey wound through many different industries and sectors over many years — work that taught us patience and discipline, how to build something carefully, and how to look after the people inside it.

We learned what it means to be trusted, and how easily trust can be broken. We learned that shortcuts rarely last, and that the things worth keeping are built slowly, with heart. We met people from every walk of life, and in all of them we saw the same truth: that who we become is shaped, more than anything, by how we were cared for at the very beginning.

And through all of it — every role, every long day, every fresh start — the same question kept returning to us, first as a whisper and then as something we could no longer ignore: what are we really here to give back?

Chapter Three

The day the dream had a name

The answer, when it finally came, was small enough to hold in your arms. Children. The youngest among us — the ones who arrive already holding everything they need to flourish, asking only for someone to believe in them and a place to put down roots.

We had spent a lifetime gathering experience from the wider world. Now we wanted to pour all of it back into the place where a life truly begins. So in Ravenhall, in Melbourne's west, we planted Country Kids Learning Center — and we chose, deliberately, to make it not-for-profit. This was never meant to be about what we could take. It was always meant to be about what we could give.

We believe, with everything we are, that every child deserves to thrive. Not only the fortunate ones. Not only some of them. Every single child who walks through our doors, exactly as they are.

Chapter Four

What we planted

We built our center on one unshakeable belief: that a child, like a seed, already contains the whole of who they will become. Our work is simply to provide the right soil — the warmth, the safety, the patience, and the love that lets what is already there unfold. From that single belief, everything else grew roots:

Seven rooms, named for this land

Joey and Koala, Kookaburra and Cockatoo, Kingfisher, Kangaroo and Bunjil — so that from their very first day, our children grow up knowing the creatures, the seasons, and the Country they belong to.

Five series we call Seeds, Country, River, Seasons and High Country — learning that wasn't borrowed from somewhere far away, but grown here, in this soil, under this sky.

Because we know that wonder, curiosity and friendship are not a break from learning — they are the most powerful learning there is.

Chapter Five

A promise we make in writing

There is a quieter part of love — the part no one applauds — and it is this: the careful, unglamorous, never-ending work of keeping children safe. We chose to take it as seriously as anything we have ever done.

We hold ourselves to Australia's National Quality Framework, to ACECQA and the VEYLDF, and to every one of the Victorian Child Safe Standards — not as boxes to be ticked, but as promises we make to every family who trusts us. When you place your child in our care, you hand us the most precious thing you have. We will never, ever treat that lightly. Every policy, every check, every quiet routine of supervision is simply love, written down where it can be kept.

Chapter Six

Walking together

We have never believed a child can be raised by a center alone. It takes a village — and so families are never guests in our program. They are partners, contributors, and the first and most important teachers their children will ever have. The world inside our walls and the world beyond them are woven together, because that is how children learn most deeply: when everything around them makes sense as one.

And we walk this Country with humility. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and grow, and we pay our deepest respects to Elders past, present and emerging. Long before any of us arrived here, the oldest living culture on earth already understood what we are only now learning to put into words — that children grow through story, through care, through Country, through belonging. We weave First Nations perspectives through everything we do, not as a gesture once a year, but as a living part of every day — walking together on a path of learning, respect, and reconciliation.
